"Viewing Device: Teapot"

14" x 12" x 8", ceramic, lens, mirror, 2003

Many ceramic artists pay homage to the classic form and use of a teapot. This piece from the series "Viewing Devices," is a photographically based artist's interpretation. "Teapot" functions as a camera obscura, sitting on a delicate tripod. The adjustable spout allows the user to adjust the focal length of the lens, focusing the image projected on the screen hidden under the lid.

The text is adapted from an early twentieth century poem, written in response to the 'Kodak Girl' ad campaign released at the time. It reads:

No wonder where the camera is
A witchery is nigh;
For see! The witch approaches,
Enchantment in her eye.
And I feel the luring magic,
Of image that transcends
As I view the pictured features
Reveal'd me through the lense [sic].
